Read the color, choose the construction, and check a paid sample. Start with the decision you need to make.
01 / Read the color
Look at where the light and dark sit.
Balayage describes a hand-painted approach to color placement. A color name alone leaves a lot open: two blonde references can have very different roots, contrast, and brightness around the face.
- Root
- Notice how dark the top looks and how far that depth continues before it blends into lighter hair.
- Face frame
- Look at the brightness next to the face. Point out whether you want a visible light section or a softer transition.
- Ribbons
- Follow the lighter sections through the lengths. Are they fine and blended, or wider with a clear contrast?
- Ends
- Check how light the ends appear and whether darker sections continue through them.
You do not need salon terminology. Mark the part of a reference you like and write a plain description, such as “keep this darker root, with less brightness around the face.”
